In 2013 there had been a few sneak-in burglaries in my area and my then partner suggested it might be an idea to get a dog.
One of my friends Grandmas runs Carr House Rescue in Hull and I decided this would be my first point of call.
While wandering around the kennels there were about 30 dogs of varying breeds, I did notice Mowgli, you can read about his story here, but initially, I was overwhelmed by the number of staffies and decided to take a lovely little girl called Stella for a walk.
Mum was with me and she set off with Stella and while I was walking to catch them up one of the volunteer walkers was walking, what I now know to be Mowgli the Rottweiler.

Seeing Mowgli with the volunteer I walked up to him and put my hand out to him, he immediately pushed himself into me, so the decision was made for him to come home with me.
Mowgli was originally fed kibble but I soon transitioned him onto to raw.
In June this year, my dog walker returned from their walk concerned as he had very bloody runny poo.
This pet parent doesn’t mess about with any sign of illness or injury and he was booked into to see the vet the same day.
Over the following two weeks, they carried out lots of different tests including an ultrasound which disclosed pancreatitis.

We left the vets with drugs, prescription food and lots of information on what he could and couldn’t eat. The main issue is fat content.
For a couple of weeks, he was fed the prescription diet and he went back for a check-up and though he improved the one thing I noticed was the smell from him, both from his mouth and his bum.
His beautifully silky coat which I was always so proud of started to go incredibly dull, and even though my vet was doing research into changing his food everything they came up with was still kibble.

So, me being me decided I was going to sort this myself there had to be a food out there that was low in fat and didn’t contain any nasties which would also bring the shine back to his coat.
Butternut Box

While I was researching an advert popped up on Facebook for a new dog food that was cooked and was also low in fat.

Clicking the link through to their website I found Butternut box where you are invited to Build Your Box, click this link and it takes you through to a series of questions about you and your dog:
- Your Dogs Name
- Your Dogs Sex
- Neutered?
- Adult or Puppy
- Age Years and Months
- Breed
- What they eat currently
- How fussy with eating
- Proportion
- Weight
- How active
- Food allergies
- Health issues
- Snacks
Your final click takes you to your customised plan with recommendations on the food to include in your plan.
Completing the questionnaire was easy and I was surprised to see when I got to the health section the dropdown included pancreatitis.
Mowgli’s first Butternut Box
This was a start so I ordered my first box for delivery the following Thursday, the food arrived really well packaged in a box with wool and ice packs to keep it cool. Plus I was really pleased to see the boxes and icepacks are recyclable and the wool is biodegradable.

It is recommended when you are changing food over that you transition from your existing food Butternut Box includes a transitioning guide in your first box to help you with this process.
We followed the instructions over the two weeks and found the transition went smoothly, seeing a marked difference in both the look and smell of his poo.
Butternut Box is freshly cooked food, made with all-natural meat and vegetables it looks so good, you could eat it yourself, check out Butternut Box Instagram for evidence.
Mowgli’s 3-month check-up
Mowgli has since been for his 3-month check-up and his vet commented on how well he looked, the pancreatitis is now under control and his skin and coat has it’s natural shine back.

But better still he absolutely loves this food and it’s so easy to store and serve, I store his full order in one shelf of my freezer and take out two at a time to defrost, you can feed frozen too if you wish.

Butternut Box all began with a dog farting, that is why I turned to them as they have developed a freshly prepared food which can be served thawed or frozen, with their own nutritionists why wouldn’t you want to provide your dog with high-quality freshly prepared food.
